BYU men's lacrosse overwhelms Florida State to reach MCLA championship game

No. 1 seed BYU did not just beat Florida State on Thursday afternoon, the Cougars made a statement.

At the River City Sportsplex in Virginia, BYU looked every bit like a national championship contender, overpowering Florida State 19-8 in the MCLA Division I National Tournament semifinals.

For a brief stretch early on, the game looked competitive. Florida State matched BYU goal for goal in the opening quarter, and the Seminoles tied the game 3-3 early in the second after arriving in Virginia with momentum from an upset win over Tennessee earlier in the week.

Then BYU took over.

The Cougars exploded for seven second-quarter goals, turning a close contest into a runaway before halftime. BYU played fast and aggressively all afternoon, constantly pressuring Florida State with quick passes and relentless energy. The Cougars seemed to win every loose ball and turned nearly every defensive stop into another scoring opportunity.

Midfielder Mason Quick led the charge with one of the most dominant performances of the tournament so far, scoring eight goals and adding two assists. Quick consistently found open space in transition and capitalized before Florida State could recover defensively.

The defense matched the intensity. Goalkeeper Easton Wilkey made key saves during Florida State scoring runs, while BYU controlled faceoffs and won critical ground balls to limit the Seminoles’ opportunities.

The win continued a dominant postseason run for the Cougars, who entered nationals with only one loss all season and had already defeated Michigan State and Georgia earlier in the week.

Now, BYU advances to the national championship game against Virginia Tech with a chance to move one step closer to an MCLA National Championship.
