BYU men's golf capped off its fourth tournament of the year by finishing 14th at the Bryson Invitational in South Carolina this week, finishing with a score of 6 under par.
Freshman Kihei Akina shined in the tournament, finishing 27th overall after jumping up from starting the last day in 56th place.
“I hit the driver well today and gave myself a lot of looks,” said Akina. “I played smart and kept the scorecard clean for the most part.”
Akina recorded a score of 3 under on Wednesday, including a timely eagle on the 14th hole that helped him score a combined 1 under for the tournament.
Peter Kim followed after him for the Cougars, posting an overall score of 3 over for the tournament's 54 holes, tying for 51st overall.
Simon Kwon and Tyson Shelley followed after Kim in the leaderboard, posting scores of 4 over and 5 over par.
Angus Klintworth also trailed close behind with an overall score of 6 over, finishing the final round with a score of even par.
“Coaches and players did a poor job preparing for this event,” said coach Bruce Brockbank. "The golf course was awesome, but we just didn’t handle the bermuda grass and the wet conditions very well. Really struggled with our short games and putting this week. What made it really bad was the way we finished our rounds. Today was better, but a very poor finish."
The Cougars will look ahead to their next tournament in Carmel, Calif., on Oct. 27-28, playing at The Preserve Golf Club Collegiate.
