BYU men’s golf advances to NCAA championship after strong regional showing

The No. 24 BYU men’s golf team is headed to the NCAA national championship after securing a fourth-place finish Wednesday at the NCAA Athens Regional in Georgia, continuing one of the program’s most impressive seasons in recent years.

The Cougars entered the regional needing a top-five finish to advance and delivered under pressure against one of the nation’s toughest fields.

BYU stayed consistent throughout the three-round tournament, using balanced scoring and veteran composure to punch its ticket to college golf’s biggest stage.

Freshman star Kihei Akina once again led the way for the Cougars. Akina opened the tournament with a 3-under 68 and helped BYU remain near the top of the leaderboard from start to finish. The freshman has become one of the breakout stars in college golf this season and has played a major role in BYU’s rise into the national rankings.

BYU’s success this spring has been built on much more than one player. Veterans Tyson Shelley and Simon Kwon have provided leadership and postseason experience, while the Cougars’ depth has allowed them to compete with some of the top programs in the country week after week.

The regional performance was another example of the consistency BYU has shown all season. Earlier this year, the Cougars posted strong finishes at some of college golf’s premier events, including a third-place finish at the Western Intercollegiate and a dominant performance at the Bridgestone Collegiate Invitational.

Akina’s breakout season reached another level in March when he captured his first collegiate victory at the R.E. Lamkin Invitational. Trailing by five shots entering the final round, he fired a bogey-free 64 to rally for the win and establish himself as one of the nation’s top freshmen.

Now, BYU will turn its attention to the NCAA championship, where the Cougars will face many of the top-ranked teams and players in the country. The national championship represents the ending of a season that has seen BYU steadily prove itself on bigger stages.

For a program that has spent years building toward moments like this, the Cougars are no longer just happy to qualify. After a season filled with statement performances, BYU enters the NCAA championship believing it can compete with anyone in the field.
