BYU hockey returns for the first time since 2022

Alumni of the disbanded BYU hockey team will return for one game against the University of Utah Hockey Alumni on Friday at 8:30 p.m.

The game will take place as part of the grand opening for the Utah Mammoth Ice Center in Sandy.

This will be the first time the BYU hockey team has played since it was disbanded in 2022. BYU discontinued the team due to various concerns, including Title IX constraints.

Excitement came when the BYU Hockey Instagram posted a story on Feb. 12, reading, "Did you miss us??? Because we missed you," with the following story reading, "Announcement coming tomorrow."

BYU hockey announced the next day, on Feb. 13, that it would be playing the alumni game in the Utah Mammoth Ice Center.

The BYU hockey team began in 2008, created from the already existing Provo Ice Cats club team. The team played just five minutes away from BYU campus at the Peaks Ice Arena under the BYU name.

In 2018, BYU was a runner-up in the Mountain West Collegiate Hockey League with a season record of 12-13-3. The Cougars took the championship title in 2019 with a season record of 19-11-1.

The University of Utah was historically dominant over BYU, at one point holding a 29-game win streak over the Cougars. Despite the losing streak, the Cougars swept Utah in a two-game series in their last season in January, 2022.

The Alumni game at the Utah Mammoth Ice Center is free admission. It is a part of a three-day event celebrating the public grand opening of the community center. The community center will hold recreational skating, youth and adult hockey leagues, and opportunities to attend Utah Mammoth practices.
