SANDY — BYU hockey alumni showed its true talent in an 11-6 win over the Utah alumni hockey team at the Utah Mammoth Ice Center Friday night.
It marked the first time BYU hockey had played since 2022.
With an onslaught of goals in the second period and a "Holy War" fight in the third period, the game was a historic moment for BYU hockey.
Fans of both the Utes and the Cougars filled the small arena in the brand new Utah Mammoth Ice Center to watch the event. The stands were filled before the game started and fans wrapped around the arena.
The first period began with a goal scored by BYU. Utah soon fired back with two goals just two minutes apart. The Cougars tied the game with two minutes left in the first period.
The Cougars shined in the second period, scoring seven goals against the Utes. Utah managed to put one goal in the back of the net, ending the second period with a score of 9-3.
The third period began with a lot of scoring chances for both teams. The Cougars again opened up the period scoring another goal, making the score 10-3.
Penalties on the Cougars gave the Utes two power plays in the third period. BYU held off the first power play but could not hold off on the second power play, giving another goal to the Utes.
Many of the players were seen laughing and going back and forth with players of the opposing team throughout the game.
Tensions rose with three minutes left in the third period when a fight broke out between a BYU player and a Utah player. Following the fight, the arena roared with a distinct "BYU" chant.
The Utes put two more goals in the back of the net, and the Cougars returned one, ending the game with an 11-6 score.
BYU fans left the arena cheering, some taking pictures of the BYU alumni team and some singing the Cougar Fight Song.
