BYU basketball 'in lockstep' with big man recruit, Kevin Young says

BYU basketball coach Kevin Young addressed the media on Tuesday to discuss offseason roster moves and everybody’s favorite question.

Will the Cougars find a big man?

Young, who got right down to business to open the media press conference, gave some insight as to what he and his staff have been working on this summer.

“We’ve been in lockstep with really one specific guy for a while,” said Young. “There’s a lot of logistical things that have to get ironed out with some of these guys.”

Young detailed what exactly they are looking for in a big and how he hopes this player will fit with the rest of the team, especially with point guard Rob Wright III.

“Obviously, a little bit more size would be good,” Young said. “[And] trying to pair Rob up with somebody that can play away from the basket a little bit more, not just shooting but functionality wise, DHOs (dribble handoffs), pocket passes, things like that.”

He continued on saying that his staff has been going after a very specific type of player at the position and that he “feels good about where we are at in the process.”

Young emphasized that he appreciated the enthusiasm from the fan base surrounding this upcoming season’s roster. However, he said that he felt like there had been some misreporting on who the team was actually in talks with.

Young said that he is planning on filling out all 15 spots on the roster. BYU has four more spots to fill and players to grab in the next couple months. Young said that they are looking both internationally and within the portal to find more players to build their roster.

As for the current roster Young is happy with who they’ve been able to bring in.

“I’ve really liked the guys we’ve brought in, just in terms of their character, how they fit into the program,” he said. “The team chemistry is just really building from the guys we’ve brought in.”
