BYU baseball sweeps Houston in 3-game series

BYU beat the University of Houston 6-1 on Saturday, finalizing a sweep in the conference series.

BYU scored first in the second inning. Tu’alau Wolfgramm doubled down the left field line and stole third base. Then he scored on Bryker Hursdman’s ground out.

Houston matched that with a home run in their half of the third inning against BYU pitcher Cayson Bell.

BYU responded in the sixth inning with three more runs. Luke Anderson and Ryder Robinson hit consecutive singles, then Easton Jones doubled to center field. Luke Anderson scored and Ryder Robinson advanced to third. After Wolfgramm struck out, Hurdsman singled, and Robinson and Jones scored.

In the seventh inning, Anderson homered to left field, and in the ninth inning, Keoni Painter also homered to left field.

BYU showed power at the plate, with two home runs and three doubles.

BYU pitching also had a good night, holding Houston to only one run. Starter Bell pitched into the fifth inning and gave up 6 hits, including two for extra bases. He struck out two. Nate Gray then replaced Bell, and although he struggled throwing strikes (only 26 of 48 total pitches), he earned the win and pitched 2 ⅔ scoreless innings. He gave up two hits and two walks.

Dan Brousseau pitched the eighth inning. Tyler Ball finished the game. Neither gave up any hits or runs.

The usually dependable Ezra McNaughton struggled at the plate, going 0-4. However, even after getting no hits, his batting average is still .373.

BYU plays one game against Lamar on Tuesday while traveling home for a three-game conference series next weekend against Arizona State.
