After coming off a hot-hitting night against Texas Tech, BYU was hoping to carry that momentum against Baylor in the second round but failed to do so in a 13-9 loss.
The Bears scored the first five runs through two innings, and then came BYU with a very strong third inning.
Singles from Ridge Erickson and Crew McChesney scored two runs for the Cougars.
An RBI double from Luke Anderson, followed by an RBI single for Ezra McNaughton, tied the game at 5-5. Bryker Hurdsman’s sacrifice fly put the Cougars ahead at 6-5 through three innings.
That’s when the errors started piling up for the Cougars as they gave up four unearned runs down the stretch. The first unearned run was in the fourth inning for Baylor to tie the game, 6-6.
RBIs from Bryker Hurdsman and Keoni Painter in the fifth inning put the Cougars ahead 8-6, but the Cougars only put up one run in the last four innings and made some costly mistakes on defense.
All-Big 12 Second Team selection Ashton Johnson gave up a costly 3-run home run in the sixth inning to Baylor’s Brady Janusek that gave the Bears some breathing room at 10-8.
The Bears took advantage of some more mistakes from the Cougars by scoring three runs in the seventh inning to go ahead for good, 13-8.
A home run from Ryder Robinson was all the Cougars could muster as they fell to Baylor, 13-9.
BYU is unlikely to play in the postseason as its RPI is too low to grant an NCAA Regional berth. The Cougars will finish the season at 28-27 and will look to rebuild for the upcoming season.
