BYU baseball advances to Big 12 quarterfinals

No. 12 seed BYU upset No. 5 seed Arizona State 2-0 in the first round of the Big 12 Conference Tournament on Wednesday morning in Arlington, Texas.

BYU's Crew McChesney doubled to right-center in the second inning to drive in Keoni Painter and Bryker Hurdsman drew a bases-loaded walk in the fifth to bring in Tate Gambill.

The win is BYU’s first postseason victory since 2017. The victory improves BYU’s overall record to 28-26 this season.

The loss marked the first time all season the Sun Devils were shut out. Arizona State did not have a runner in scoring position until the bottom of the eighth inning.

“I didn’t think a shoutout was on anyone’s bingo card against that team,” BYU Cougar coach Trent Pratt said.

Wednesday’s game was also the Sun Devils’ fourth consecutive loss.

Despite the setback, Arizona State set a tournament record with 18 strikeouts. However, BYU’s pitchers showed better control, throwing just 113 pitches with a 67.3% strike rate, compared to ASU’s 200 pitches and a 59% strike rate.

Up next for the Cougars is an 8 a.m. MDT matchup Thursday against No. 4 seed Arizona, which earned a first-round bye and will have had four days of rest before the game.
