For the first time in more than a decade, coach Andy Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs are staring at a winless start to the season.
They dropped their opener 27-21 to the Chargers in Brazil and then lost 20-17 to the Eagles at Arrowhead, leaving the perennial contenders at 0-2 and searching for answers.
The problems have been clear. Injuries have thinned the receiving room, turnovers have come at costly moments, and Reid’s normally sharp game planning has leaned too aggressive. In Week 2, a fourth-and-1 gamble deep in Kansas City territory backfired and set up Philadelphia’s score.
“We need to clean things up,” the BYU alum said after the game. “I put the guys in a tough spot with some of those calls, and that’s on me.”
The defense has shown stretches of dominance, limiting the Eagles to 280 total yards. The offense has moved the ball but struggled to finish drives, particularly after rookie receiver Xavier Worthy left the opener with an injury. Veteran targets like Marquise Brown and JuJu Smith-Schuster will need to shoulder more of the load as the Chiefs regroup.
Next comes a road matchup against the also winless New York Giants in Week 3. Both teams are desperate for momentum, and small details may decide the outcome. Reid is expected to lean on a more conservative script early, emphasizing ball security and third-down efficiency. The Chiefs’ defense, anchored by Chris Jones, will look to keep pressure on Giants quarterback Daniel Jones and force mistakes.
For Reid, who has built a career on consistency, the start has been uncharacteristic. But with 15 games left, Kansas City’s margin for error is already narrowing. Sunday’s game in New York may be the reset button the Chiefs need.
