Police Beat: May 29 - June 5

Theft
Surveillance footage confirmed a laptop was stolen at the Richards Building. Police submitted a photo of the suspect to the local Target, since Target gift cards had also been stolen. The suspect, a woman, was later identified at Target in a repeat shoplifting venture and was arrested.

Citizen contact
A woman was at home with her son when her apartment door mysteriously swung open. She believed it was her husband entering and didn’t see the trespasser. She suspected it wasn’t the first entry and was advised to lock her doors by police.

An officer on patrol near the Smoot Building was asked by a citizen if they could install private animal traps on campus to catch feral cats. They were informed they could not without authorization.

Three males were seen kneeling near the police bike shed and rubbing sticks together. An officer approached them and found no criminal activity was taking place.

An unspecified incident occurred between two juvenile FSY participants who are apparently best friends. As a consequence of the incident, the two were not allowed to stay overnight. Officers contacted their parents, who are also friends, and the participants were released into the care of one of the mothers.

Campus ban
An officer arrived on campus to serve a campus ban to an individual. It was given without incident.

Welfare check
Officers received a call from an individual whose spouse, a BYU employee, wasn’t responding to their calls. An officer responded to the Talmage Building to check on the employee and found they were safe and sound. They returned the call to their spouse and confirmed they were OK.

Missing person
An officer responded to Heritage Halls after parents reported their child missing after FSY concluded. After extensive searching, the child was found near Brick Oven, where he believed they were meeting.

Two juvenile FSY participants were reported missing at Stover Hall. Officers searched the area and found that, having been separated, the two returned to their dorm.

A youth from a sports camp was reported missing at Helaman Field. Officers searched the area and found them safe in their dorm room.

Trespassing
Two females were reported at Brigham Square interviewing FSY participants as part of a TikTok video. The officer couldn’t locate them and there were no other witnesses.

An individual who had been banned from BYU campus was seen leaving the Harold B. Lee Library. Officers reviewed surveillance footage, found that it was indeed him, and contacted him by phone. In a meeting with police, the man admitted he had been trespassing and was given a citation for criminal trespassing. This is not the first time he’s been given such a citation.

Medical
An FSY participant fell ill at the Wilkinson Student Center. BYU EMS assisted them and released them to an FSY Counselor.

An injured intramural player at the Richards Building field was transported to an instacare facility for further care.

There was a reported scooter crash at Heritage Halls. Provo EMS found him conscious but with a broken tooth and cut lip. He was taken to Utah Valley Hospital in an ambulance.

Provo EMS responded to the Benson Building to assist an individual with a bloody nose and experiencing dizziness. It was determined that they were in good condition.

An FSY participant was feeling ill at the Marriott Center. They were identified as a Norwegian foreign exchange student who was having an allergic reaction to pollen. BYU EMS stayed with her until she felt better.

An individual had a medical emergency at the MTC and was taken to the hospital by Provo paramedics.

A woman was reported unconscious in a bathroom at the Wilkinson Center. Officers searched for her but were unable to find her, and suspect the report was unfounded.

An adult male reported chest pain and shortness of breath. After being treated by authorities, He was reported to be in good condition and released.

An FSY participant passed out at the Joseph F. Smith Building. BYU EMS responded and learned that the participant had passed out briefly and was feeling tired. They stayed with her for about a half hour before clearing her.

Agency assist
Police responded to a report of a suspicious male with a firearm south of campus. No unordinary conduct was observed during the following police patrol.

Traffic
An officer saw a vehicle run a red light at Cougar Blvd and State Street. They did a traffic stop and found empty beer cans in the vehicle. The driver had clearly been drinking, with glassy eyes, the smell of alcohol on their breath and slurred speech. After refusing to perform a sobriety test, they were arrested and later charged with a DUI after bodily fluid tests.

An accident occurred in Lot 48, and an officer arrived to find that information had already been exchanged and one party had left. A police report was filed and statements from both parties were recorded.

There was a small accident in Lot 59. No further issues occurred.

Noise complaint
A complainant living across the street from the University Services Building called the police regarding a refrigerated trailer that had been running nonstop for several days. Officers learned that BYU Risk Management were currently testing the scene’s decibel level.

Animal
An unattended dog was seen near the construction site at Brigham Square. The dog wasn’t found during a search but was reportedly back on the scene not long after.

Fire
Fire alarms were triggered at the Benson Building. Officers found a BYU electrician at the scene attempting to silence the alarms, and they learned that contracted workers were present for maintenance on the alarms.

Robbery alarm
A robbery alarm was triggered at the ASB. An officer responded to the scene and saw that everything was in order. It was later determined to have been a malfunction.
