Police Beat: June 25 - July 2

Domestic violence
A man allegedly forced a screaming woman into a car near the Music Building. The vehicle was followed by police, who arrested the man for domestic violence and was taken to the Utah County Jail.

Trespassing
A motion alarm sounded on the third floor of LaVell Edwards Stadium. Two young adult men had jumped a concrete wall to gain entry, then slipped through an open door leading to the lounge area. They reportedly stole soda from a refrigerator and were cited for theft and trespassing.

Family problem
A call from Wymount Terrace reported a suspected family dispute. Police contacted those involved, who admitted they had been arguing loudly. Both denied any violent physical contact and said they felt safe. They were advised to be mindful of their noise levels during future disagreements.

Traffic
A vehicle was speeding on West Campus Drive. The driver was pulled over and cited by police.

A vehicle ran a red light at 900 North and 900 East. After being pulled over, the driver admitted to running the light and texting while driving. Police also discovered the driver had only a learner’s permit and was not accompanied by a licensed adult. The driver was cited for all three offenses.

Two vehicles in Lot 41 were reportedly pulling a homemade sled or cart. Police located the individuals involved, who were interviewed and warned about their violations.

Animal problem
A report of a distressed deer came in from near the Richards Building. Police arrived but could not locate the animal.

Medical
Responders arrived at the Joseph Smith Building after an FSY participant needed assistance. The child was treated, cleared for release and taken into the custody of their parents.

A teenage girl fainted outside the Marriott Center. She told responders she had not eaten that day and had fainted several times in recent weeks. Her mother declined a hospital visit but said they would follow up with a physician.

A bishop became lightheaded after standing for an extended period while teaching a lesson. He said recent surgery may have contributed. Authorities transported him to a hospital for evaluation.

Welfare check
A student was concerned about a roommate who had left early in the morning and had not returned. Attempts to contact the roommate had failed, but police confirmed the individual was at a family gathering.

Suspicious
A suspicious van was reported in the Missionary Training Center parking lot, with occupants attempting to contact passersby. Officers arrived, but the van had already left. A scan of the area revealed no evidence of wrongdoing.

A suspicious man was seen near the Fine Arts Building construction site. An employee said he saw the man walk to his car with a toolbox. The man was gone when officers arrived. Police will continue searching if any tools are reported missing.

A security guard near the Richards Building spotted individuals on a BYU field. Police contacted them and escorted them off without incident.

Information
A woman on campus reported receiving threatening text messages. She and her friends provided additional information to the police. Officers explained the messages were part of a current digital scam, and counseled the group on how to respond in case of future contact.

Found property
An officer found a backpack by an FSY tent that appeared to belong to a participant. It was taken to Lost and Found in the Wilkinson Student Center.

Missing person
An FSY participant was reported missing by a counselor. Officers contacted the child’s mother and found she had picked them up early but failed to inform FSY staff. The report stemmed from a miscommunication and failure to follow check-out protocol.

Fire
A smell of smoke was reported on the fourth floor of the WSC. Police notified Provo Fire and EMS and investigated. The smell was traced to a broiler that had been in use. The fire and EMS response was canceled.

An alarm sounded at Wymount Terrace. An officer responded, and occupants confirmed the alarm was triggered by cooking. The officer silenced the alarm.

Officers responded to the Benson Building after a fire alarm went off. They determined the alarm system had malfunctioned due to recent maintenance, but the sprinkler system remained functional.

Waterflow alarm
An officer responded to the MTC after a waterflow alarm was triggered. Officials on-site confirmed there was no danger, and the alarm was attributed to a faulty panel.

Disturbance
Police received a report of loud vehicle noises outside the Cannon Center. A dark Audi was reportedly involved, but officers found no vehicles upon arrival. Surveillance footage showed no evidence of excessive speed or reckless driving.
