BYUSA promotes friendship, fun at Clubs Rush

Clubs Rush drew students to Brigham Square on Thursday, Sept. 11.

The event offered students the chance to explore countless ways to get involved on campus from studying wristwatches to singing along with Disney favorites and everything in between.

Clubs Rush is really fun because its kind of a chance to shop around for what you want to do, said Robyn Damon, BYU Student Service Association (BYUSA) clubs coordinator. Students can kind of look around at a lot of things, a lot of different types of clubs, all at one time.

Damon noted that while the official clubs website displays a master list of all of BYUs clubs, Clubs Rush provides a unique opportunity for students to see what clubs interest them and meet with current members and presidents in person.

Dozens of booths were set up in Brigham Square to highlight just a small portion of BYUs more than 130 active clubs.

I think its really important that you get involved outside of your major, like outside of just school. I think college has a lot more to offer than just an education, and part of it is just being social, meeting new people and being involved," said Joshua Gleim, a member of the Horology Club. "I think clubs (are) one of the best ways to do that."

Jonathan Barker, BYUSA Clubs vice president, played a dual role in this years event, representing both BYUSA as a whole and the Golf Club, which he founded earlier this year.

One thing that was so impressive to me was the fact that these students dont gain anything from bringing people into their clubs. They dont. Theyre just passionate, and they show that passion through sharing, Barker said. I think that, for me, is one of the most impressive parts of these clubs the level of passion that they have and the amount of time that theyre willing to put into this and get other people involved.

Clubs Rush provides a way for students to reconnect with old interests while pursuing new passions as well.

I love seeing everyone interact with different things and kind of find out their interests because we have something for everyone, said Nicolette McIntyre, a BYUSA student employee. I dont think a lot of people recognize what the school has to offer, and so when we get Clubs Rush or other activities, then people realize theres more that the school has for them.

Clubs Rush invites students to step out of their comfort zone, try something new and make friends along the way.

Students interested in participating in campus clubs are invited to come to Clubs Night every Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Wilkinson Student Center.
