Spanish Fork's Angelus Theatre is working to showcase productions from local playwrights.
The theatre first opened in September 1912. It has alternated between screening movies and hosting live stage performances for more than a century it has been in business.
Curt Gordon, the theatre's current owner and operator, has been part of the theatre for over two decades, he said.
"I started working for Boothe Brothers Music in about '98, I think it was, and I started doing shows here on the side ever since 1998," Gordon said. "I stayed for about 25 years. They couldn't get rid of me."
Angelus Theatre is showcasing 14 full-length musical productions from local playwrights in 2025, Gordon said. "Lancelot," a musical by Jade Higley, is among the list. It ran from Feb. 20 through March 1.
Higley's theatrical origins began at Angelus Theatre, he said.
"I moved here about seven years ago, and my wife was into theatre so she kind of pulled me in a little bit," Higley said. "About two years ago, I started getting interested in writing a show, and that was when I started writing 'Lancelot.'"
Higley loves the opportunity to see his vision come to life, he said.
"I wanted to share an important message for everyone to see, and I'm really happy that that message is being shared," he said. "The stories for Lancelot and the characters around him — I'm glad people get to see it now, and see my vision come to life."
One of Gordon's main goals is to give local playwrights the opportunity to see their shows come to life on the Angelus Theatre stage, he said.
"We focus on local, original theatre, so meaning local playwrights (and) original productions," Gordon said. "And, to me, that's what we do because there are plenty of theatres around who do an awesome job, but mostly they're doing famous productions, if you will. And what we focus on is original productions," Gordon said.
The theatre's next production, "The Phantom Breaks the Opera," is a comedy play by Stephen Gashler. The show will run from March 15 through 27.
