The Rug Room is tufting up a storm in American Fork

The rug room in American Fork

The Rug Room is a workshop where people can go and make their own rugs. It is a unique and fun addition to other creative workshops in the area.

The owner, Hunter Maready, got the idea from an Instagram reel.

“I was scrolling through Instagram, and a reel for somebody rug tufting popped up, and I was like, wait, this is kind of the coolest thing,” he said.

People might be surprised to know that Maready didn’t know much more than them just a few months ago.

“I made one rug, and it’s pretty iffy, and then didn’t make a single other rug until after we had opened up,” Maready said.

Rugs begin with a sketch, with help from a projector to get the design right. Participants can tuft any rug design of their choice, whether it’s cute, crazy or a little weird; the only limitation is sizing.

After the design is laid down, the tufting can begin. Participants are told to start with the outline before they begin filling in the rest. At the end of the 3 1/2-hour class, they get to take their rug home.

The activity costs $135 per rug. Classes are held on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday evenings. A private group class option is also available.
