The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints reorganizes First Presidency

First Presidency announcement

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints held a special broadcast to announce the reorganization of the First Presidency on Tuesday, Oct. 14.

President Dallin H. Oaks was set apart Tuesday morning as the 18th President of the Church with President Henry B. Eyring as the first counselor and President D. Todd Christofferson as the second counselor.

President Jeffrey R. Holland now serves as the President of the Quorum of the Twelve and presides over the newly reorganized quorum.

Elder Gary E. Stevenson, who conducted the broadcast, described the reorganization of the First Presidency as a “revelatory experience [that] again confirmed to each of us in the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles that Jesus Christ directs this Church.”

Both President Eyring and President Christofferson expressed humility and surprise at their calling as counselors in the First Presidency.

“I recognize that I am not called to be honored, but called to serve,” President Christofferson said.

President Eyring shared that he has always felt the Lord calling him to be better, but never quite felt like he was getting it right. He expressed his deep gratitude for the trust that he feels from the Lord in serving in this calling.

All members of the First Presidency testified powerfully that Christ is at the head of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and that His work continues on today to prepare His people for the Second Coming.

“We do not have the answers to all the world’s problems, they have not been revealed,” President Oaks said. “But what we do know is that we are all children of Heavenly Parents and that we are called to serve all of the children of God.”

Many students at Brigham Young University watched the announcement and were excited to learn who the members of the new First Presidency were, and they expressed optimism about the future leadership of the Church.
