General conference speakers focus on the importance of covenants, fasting and dangers of gambling

General Conference OCT 2026 Saturday Morning

The 196th semiannual General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints began with the Saturday morning session.

The session started with Elder Gerit W. Gong, of the Quorum of the Twelve, speaking on ordinances, covenants and temples.

"I once heard, 'Elder Gong, we're happy to have a temple, but sorry, it's a small temple,' I said dear brother, dear sister, ordinances are not big or small," Elder Gong said.

Elder Gérald Caussé addressed the conference for the second time as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve.

"You demonstrate the reality of a loving Savior and the blessings that come through His Gospel."

Elder Ulisses Soares discussed the blessings of fasting and how it can transform lives.

"His example teaches us that fasting and prayer may not remove every burden from our path, but they draw heaven near," Elder Soares said.

Elder Soares' talk was Molly Updike's favorite from the session.

"How important it is to fast so that we can be closer to the Savior," Updike said.

President D. Todd Christofferson, Second Counselor in the First Presidency, concluded the session, emphasizing the importance of avoiding gambling.

"Putting money or something at value at risk to bet on a particular outcome or event is an activity that has plagued mankind almost, I suppose, from the beginning of time," President Christofferson said.

Luke Updike appreciated the guidance from President Christofferson.

"The fact that we have prophets and apostles today who can guide us and talk about contemporary issues, like we had President Christofferson talk about gambling," Luke Updike said.

President Christofferson pleaded with those listening to abstain from gambling and to use those resources to do good.
