Smith Building Education in Zion gallery, students gathered to celebrate the Lunar New Year by participating in a craft night.

Papers, Chinese characters, glue, markers and good moods were present among the participants to celebrate one of the most important Chinese traditions of the year.

One of those Chinese culture enthusiasts was Brigham Young University student Lydia Booth.

I love the Chinese culture, and when I saw that there was an activity going on, I wanted to come participate, Booth said. I love the many traditions they have in the culture, but I also just love how friendly and inclusive it is.

While some students showed up for the craft, others went for the culture. This was the case of Brigette Cruz, who learned the language.

I learned by practicing every day, because if you dont practice, you will lose it, Cruz said.

Another main theme among students was gastronomy; many of them expressed their love for Chinese food.

Its actually pretty good. For example, my friend is going to make moon cakes tonight, Cruz said.

Another view of Chinese culture was shared by Phoebe Booth, a BYU student and participant at the craft.

I love the holidays, but (I) especially love the stories behind the holidays, Phoebe Booth said. I was in a Chinese immersion program growing up, and I just remember we would come together and we'd draw the stories and everything.

The Lunar New Year was a great opportunity to celebrate, and many students hope the upcoming year of the horse will bring fortune and health for everyone.
