BYU Living Legends celebrates 55 years of culture, identity and heritage

Brigham Young University's Living Legends performed Seasons on Friday, March 27, celebrating the groups 55th anniversary with a multigenerational show exploring identity, ancestry and faith.

The performance featured current cast members alongside alumni spanning more than five decades, many of whom joined family members onstage in select numbers, creating a rare multigenerational production.

The show followed a central storyline: a modern-day boy dressed in a hoodie enters a dark, chaotic world, overwhelmed and unsure of where he belongs. As the performance unfolds, his ancestors appear and begin to teach him who he is.

Its a story about family, and a story about ancestors, said Niyana Harris, a student who performed in the Native American numbers of the show.

Through dances representing Latin American, Native American and Polynesian cultures, the performance illustrated a cycle of prosperity, pride, conflict and repentance.

Early segments focused on joy and unity, while later pieces depicted division and struggle, and then returned to reconciliation and faith.

This show is my foundation spiritually, physically and culturally in every way, alumnus Page Benjamin said.

The inclusion of alumni made the production special, with parents, children and even grandparents sharing the stage, showing the family connections central to the shows message.

Vanessa Losic, Living Legends alumna, danced with two of her daughters.

This show is a dream come true for me," Losic said. "When I was young and danced on the team, I would picture dancing with my kids on this stage someday. Im living that dream now, and its so special.

By the final scene, the modern-day boy stood surrounded by his ancestors and family, no longer withdrawn but steady and confident.

The cast closed the performance by singing Go My Son and inviting the audience to join in.

The song has long been a key Living Legends tradition, performed at the end of each show.

Its lyrics convey how ones heritage brings strength and guidance.

Heavenly Father put us on this earth with our heritage for a reason, Harris said after the show. Our heritage is so important, and it brings us closer to Christ.

For many performers, the message of the show is deeply personal, connecting their experience onstage to their own sense of identity.

God makes us different on purpose, and its important to embrace those differences, Lesieli Malu, who danced in the Polynesian numbers, said. I never really embraced my heritage in the past, but Living Legends has given me an opportunity to do that.

While the performance showcased technical skill and cultural expression, it ultimately focused on identity and how understanding ones heritage shapes a lasting sense of purpose across generations.
