A look at the Water Lantern Festival

Water lanterns glittered in Salt Lake City during a Water Lantern Festival on June 27.

Attendees arrived at Heritage Park, ready for a night of crafting and memories. Vendors, food trucks and music entertained the guests while they worked on their lanterns.

Event Producer Joey McKnight stated that attendees displayed a wide range of creativity when drawing on their lanterns.

"Often, they are putting remembrances, hopes and dreams, sometimes just really cute art. Anything, really. It's pretty open," McKnight said.

Attendees worked on their creations throughout the night. Attendee Taylor Hendricks dedicated her lantern to her father, who passed away from cancer.

Its just a way to say goodbye and a bunch of things that Ive wanted to tell him over the years," Hendricks said.

Frankie Humphrey's creation revolved around the aspirations she has for her own life.

I drew a bunch of wishes and things I want to accomplish," Humphrey said.

Attendees were encouraged to share what they had written on their lanterns with the audience. McKnight stated that this was his favorite part of the evening.

Shortly before the launch we invite people to come up open-mic style to come and talk about their lanterns," McKnight said.

As the sun began to set, attendees made their way to the water to release their lanterns.

At sunset, we invite everyone to make their way down to the edge of the water, where they placed their lanterns on the water and they drift out in the dark and glitter with the lights that have been placed in them," McKnight said.

The night came to a close as attendees watched their lanterns glitter as they drifted away.

For many, the most memorable time of the night won't be the lights, but rather the stories written onto each lantern.
