International Bus Road-eo rides into Salt Lake City

On May 17, the 2026 International Bus Road-eo brought together 90 transit operators from across North America.

After winning their local and state competitions, these drivers spent months preparing for the event.

"A Bus Road-eo ... is a competition that's an obstacle course for bus drivers, in a nutshell," Gavin Gustafson said.

The course tested operators on reversing, pulling up to curbs, weaving through cones, tight turns and avoiding obstacles. Competitor Tyler Goethe said the course was challenging, but he felt good about his first time at the international level.

This is my first time coming to the international. So you know, its all a learning experience, but I thought I did pretty good for a first-timer," Goethe said.

Utah Transit Authority Director Jay Fox said one section of the course stood out.

I actually think its right behind me, which is the tight squeeze. I dont know if I could get my car through there," Fox said.

Competitors were scored on a scale of zero to 700, with points deducted for hitting cones, going too fast or missing their marks. And despite the friendly atmosphere, organizers said the competition can get intense.

It gets pretty intense. I mean, everyone has a smile on their face, but everyone wants to win," Fox said.

But for many participants, the event is about more than just trophies. It's a chance to celebrate the people who keep public transit moving every day.

This is a chance for them to get out and really be recognized for their professionalism and leadership," Fox said.

From tight turns to perfect stops, these drivers knew what they were doing.
