Several BYU students have shared their families unique food traditions.

BYU student Kate Boyce said her familys General Conference food tradition is a play on a classic. Many people make cinnamon rolls, but her family has opted for orange rolls.

My grandma would make them, and I just use her recipe now because shes not here to make them anymore, Boyce said.

Boyces husband Seth, said that when he was younger, his General Conference food traditions included lots of candy.

Every half-hour, my parents would give us a little piece of candy as a bribe to stay awake, he said.

Boyce said her family is also trying something new for this Saturdays General Conference sessions: a day of pumpkin-themed meals. Their lineup includes pumpkin frittata, roasted pumpkin and quinoa salad, pumpkin curry and a spiced pumpkin roll.

Boyce said her familys General Conference food traditions have helped her stay focused on the messages shared during the conference.

If Im hungry, I cant focus on like anything else, Boyce said.

She also explained that food during General Conference weekend helps gather people together.

I feel like thats just always a good thing to listen to the prophet with your friends and family, she said.

Wendy Tingey, a student at BYU, said that growing up her family would make a list of recipes and snacks they wanted during conference weekend.

Granola was always something that was on there. And so the day before or whatever, wed just make granola and its kind of what weve always done, Tingey said.

Her family adapted their granola recipe from the Pretend Soup cookbook.

Tingey explained that since granola wasnt something her family always had, it made her extra excited for General Conference.

As the youngest of eight siblings, Tavia Breit and her family have had a long-standing General Conference food tradition. Every Sunday morning session, her mom made them Dutch babies, also known as German pancakes.

Shed make a ton and we would just feast on Dutch babies. Wed put our plate full and everything and then wed all sit around the TV and eat and do the morning sessions while eating breakfast together, Breit said.

Breit, who got married earlier this year, said her moms Dutch babies recipe was included in the home recipe book she received as a bridal shower gift. She and her husband plan to continue the tradition for the Sunday morning session.

I said were making Dutch babies, and he said, okay, that sounds awesome, Breit said.

David Grant, a BYU student whose family lives out of state, said General Conference staples for his family include sausage rolls and barbecue meatballs.

Grant grew up with this conference tradition and said he still loves the food.

Theyre absolutely exquisite, pretty much perfect, he said.

Grant explained that both recipes are easy to make and the food helped him stay focused on different speakers during General Conference.

While living at home, Grant made the meatballs and his mom made the sausage rolls. Now away at college, he has both recipes to keep his familys tradition going.

Recordings of the General Conference Sessions and talks can be found on the homepage of the Churchs website, the General Conference YouTube page and the Gospel Library app.
