The BYU Technology Transfer Office compiled a list of BYU-connected entrepreneurs who have appeared on the show.

They have presented everything from liquid nitrogen ice cream to outdoor paddle games to the sharks. As season 18 approaches, even more contestants with BYU connections will appear in this season and upcoming seasons.

BYU graduate students' data model wins NFL Big Data Bowl

A team of graduate students from BYU and Utah Valley University developed a statistical model that analyzes NFL player-tracking data to determine what a defensive back realistically could do in the split second after a quarterback releases the ball and the receiver catches it.

The project was selected as one of five winners of the NFL's Big Data Bowl, earning $9,000 and an invitation to present their research at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.

BYU graduate student researches conservation through fungi

Melissa Burrell, a BYU graduate student, is researching how native mycorrhizal fungi can help restore degraded soil. This research could help improve land reclamation and ecosystem restoration, especially in damaged mine sites.

When plants are treated with this fungi, they develop stronger root systems and survive better in harsher soils. Burrell is now working on a way to harvest and apply native fungi so this research can be used.
