Brigham Young University students brought the pop to K-pop during a lively Y-Fitness activity on March 12.
As a fun way to get exercise, the event was one of many regularly hosted by the BYU Student Wellness department — and for K-pop fans, it was a must-attend.
Y-Fitness instructor Katelynn Hales shared that K-pop has become especially popular lately.
“We had another K-pop event earlier this semester, and it was so huge,” Hales said. “So, we decided to do it again, and it just seems like something people want to come to.”
Which, in fact, seems to be the case. BYU student Bryson On shared that although he doesn’t usually attend Y-Fitness events, he went to the first K-pop cardio session with his sister and cousin, and they loved it.
“And then when we saw the posters around campus that there was going to be a comeback K-pop cardio event, we were super excited. We were like, ‘Okay, we have to go to this one again,'” On said.
He explained that although he is not necessarily the biggest K-pop fan, he knew the event would be a good time.
“And I knew that it was going to be like an event where we could dance a little bit, listen to some good music and just have fun,” On said.
On shared that after attending those two events, he is now interested in joining more HI-Fitness activities.
Friends Jocelyn Burnside and Maddie Clark have made BYU’s HI-Fitness activities a regular part of their time at the university.
“Over the last couple of years being here at BYU, I've learned how to take care of my body better, and this is a place where that supports that lifestyle,” Clark said.
Clark explained that it has helped her manage the various stressors in her life.
Burnside said she likes the atmosphere of the Y-Fitness activity.
“Oh, it's a really welcoming environment. Like you don't feel judged there,” Burnside said. “Like everyone's just there to have a good time and you're just exercising and having fun together, and there's just no judgment from anyone.”
Clark and Burnside also shared that these activities help foster their friendship.
“I feel like it's a place where we're both crazy busy, but we both carved out time to be here. And so, we stay connected,” Clark said.
So, with a busy BYU schedule, Y-Fitness events are an easy way to work out and get together with friends.
“Usually they're like 50 minutes. Just come, work really hard and come back, but it's also like, it's just a fun break,” Hales said.
