During the summertime, Brigham Young University students see campus turn into a bustling environment of FSY kids and counselors.
What they don't see, however, is the behind the scenes work that goes into running FSY.
One aspect of FSY that people might not know about is the work that goes into keeping FSY healthy. Wellness coordinators are on call for medical issues.
"I just go around campus, and I check on the youth, and all the different companies," Nina Forsythe, wellness coordinator, said. "If kids have a headache and they go back to their dorms or they want to get treated with an ibuprofen, I help with those kinds of things."
Forsythe explained that wellness coordinators also help manage the needs of FSY kids with chronic conditions, like diabetes or POTS.
"We also help with anxiety stuff too, and help kids regulate a little bit if they're overwhelmed with a certain activity," Forsythe said.
Forsythe said wellness coordinators walk around with red bags filled with medical supplies. The supplies even include tools to help with mental health concerns.
"In that bag, there are some sensory toys that they can play with to just calm down and not be overthinking," Forsythe said.
Wellness coordinators receive thorough training and often come from medical backgrounds.
Another key component of keeping FSY running smoothly is done by conference assistants.
Conference assistants help with a variety of tasks, many of which are focused on the FSY housing areas.
Hayden Greene, conference assistant, explained that every day is filled with different tasks. This includes checking on FSY kids, painting over damage on dorm walls, going on security rounds, attending the front desk of a housing area, replacing mattresses, monitoring the on-call phone for security and preparing on Saturdays for the next round of FSY conference.
Greene said he enjoys the camaraderie of working with other conference assistants.
"Being with the same person for four hours, you get to know them quite well," Greene said. "I'd say that's probably my favorite part of the position."
Session coordinators also play a role in running the logistics of FSY.
"We meet with the leadership team, which consists of assistant coordinators, ACs; wellness coordinators, WCs; and session coordinators, SCs; and… talk about the different jobs that they'll have during the week," Matthew Rowberry, session coordinator, said.
Rowberry explained that session coordinators help with the variety show, musical program, meal duties and general oversight of FSY.
Session coordinators also help with FSY kids who might be struggling.
"Making sure that they can have a good experience is our top priority," Rowberry said.
He also mentioned that the FSY system improves and becomes more efficient each year.
"There's a solid group of people just trying their best," Rowberry said. "And year after year it gets better."
Although you might not see them, wellness coordinators, conference assistants and session coordinators work behind the scenes to make FSY an amazing experience.
