French club wins BYUrovision

The French Club at Brigham Young University won this year's BYUrovision, an event inspired by the Europe's Eurovision talent contest.

European language departments from around campus gathered to compete. Teams represented languages such as French, German and Russian.

"My way of describing what Eurovision is, is basically if you took American Idol and combined that with the Olympics and put that in Europe. That's basically what it is," Caleb Rogers, Vice President of BYUSA, said.

Jim Laws, a linguistics affiliate and associate French professor, sponsors the French Club.

"For as long as I'm aware, the French Club has done a French talent show every year," Laws said. "It's gone by different names; 'So You Think You Can France' is my favorite traditional name for it. But a few years ago, I started thinking it could be bigger."

BYUrovision welcomed students from every European language department across campus to compete with a musical act or cultural dance.Students who are officially studying a language or simply have prior linguistic experience were invited to participate.

"It's more of a way that I can get my mission friends to gather together and really showcase what France has," Ashlyn Wilde, team leader of the winning act, said.

The French Club performed a creative act inspired by the French children's show, "Miraculous."

"What if we don't win? We've rehearsed every week for a couple of months," Wilde said.

It was a bittersweet victory for Professor Laws, he said.

"I'm very proud of my students and very happy to see their success," Laws said. "But, it also means I have to host this again next year, because whichever club wins is supposed to host. So I have more work ahead of me."
