BYU Senior starts new Karaoke Club for students

It’s new, it’s loud and it’s got range.

The BYUSA Karaoke Club just started this year, and whether someone enjoys performing or just cheering from the back row, there’s something for everyone.

The club was started by BYU senior Sophie Kimball and is held every Tuesday night from 8:30 to 10 p.m.. The Varsity Theater fills with music, laughter and plenty of free popcorn.

Kimball, a longtime fan of karaoke, started the club with her friends after realizing there was not already a karaoke club on campus.

"I just have always loved karaoke," Kimball said. "Me and my friends are always trying to find new places to sing at. When I found out BYU didn’t have a club, I was so surprised that I just needed to start one.”

Each week, students can take the stage solo, sing a duet or team up for a group number.

Regular club attendee, Kayla Allred, hasn’t missed a week since discovering the club.

"I say show up," Allred said. "Anyone can come. This is a great club to join. One, you don’t have to pay, and two, it’s just so awesome. You make so many new friends here, and you can develop your vocal talent.”

For Allred and Kimball, the club is about more than just music: it's about friendship and belonging.

"Part of this club is for singing, but part of it is for a place of belonging, a place of fun and friendship," Kimball said. "We just want to create an environment where everyone feels welcome, regardless of singing level."

And like any good performance, karaoke takes rhythm. From rocking on one's feet to staying on beat, it’s all about feeling the music and having fun.

So whether someone wants to sing or just cheer along, the Karaoke Club is the place to be. It's at the Varsity Theater every Tuesday night, and everyone is welcome to tune into the fun.
