Thousands gathered at Brigham Square to celebrate BYU's 150th anniversary and donate gifts using BYU's brand-new Giving Machines.
Festivities started with performances by Vocal Point and Noteworthy and a Christmas greeting from President Shane Reese.
The crowd counted down, cheered for the lights and joined in singing "Silent Night" together.
BYU spokesperson Natalie Ipson was excited about having Giving Machines on campus for the first time.
"It's such a perfect new thing for our 150th anniversary to have so much opportunity to give and serve and to have these on our campus just adds to the Christmas spirit," Ipson said.
Ipson said the Giving Machines have affordable options for students.
Another highlight was the live nativity with real people and animals. Stacey Newman works for Ivie Acres Farm in Grantsville and helped guests pet a camel named Cosmo.
“We love doing this because it definitely brings the spirit of the season," Newman said.
Cosmo the camel has also starred in Book of Mormon videos and other live nativities throughout the Christmas season.
“He loves people, he's a very attention hog," Newman said.
BYU student Marcie Mortensen’s favorite part of the evening was singing "Silent Night" and seeing the animals.
“I think it's so cute to have little Christmas traditions. I think it brings the community together," Mortensen said.
