BYU celebrates 150 years with a 'Night of Light'

BYU celebrates 150 years with a "Night of Light"

On Friday night, BYU students kicked off BYU's 150th anniversary with a date night filled with activities, free food and a light show.

Thousands of students are gathered here on BYU campus tonight to celebrate 150 years of school spirit through a "Night of Light."

The event started at 6 p.m. with free Chick-Fil-A and Subway — drawing long lines of students ready for a night of food, fun and festivities.

After grabbing sandwiches, chips and cookies, students spread across campus to explore a variety of activities — from swing dancing and watercolor painting to Minute to Win It games and karaoke.

Karaoke quickly became one of the night's most popular spots, as students took the stage to show off their singing, dancing and theatrical talents.

“There’s a lot of debate on what song we’re going to do, but some people are voting for 'Ice, Ice, Baby,' so we’ll see what happens," Fillmore said.

While some students sang their hearts out, others took to the bowling lanes in the Wilkinson Center.

“The reason I came was because my boys invited me to do some bowling. That one was really fun because I did it with some of my friends and another couple, so it was really fun," Unguren said.

The celebration also included service activities — reflecting BYU's longstanding emphasis on giving back. Some students spent part of the evening coloring ornaments to donate to local care centers.

“The service side of this University is celebrated here, and we’ve done several service events here in honor of that anniversary and legacy of service here at BYU," Crippen said.

Over at the Museum of Art, students met the Reeses, participated in an art scavenger hunt, and grabbed even more free treats.

Just down the road, the Eyring Science Center hosted planetarium shows where students could gaze at the stars.

As the evening came to a close, students ate a BYU class — Creamery Ice cream — and gathered outside for a drone show that lit up the sky.

Events celebrating BYU's 150th Anniversary will continue throughout the year and you can find the full schedule on BYU's Website.
