The BYU Career Services office is located on the first floor of the Wilkinson Student Center. The department is dedicated to helping students access all necessary resources for career exploration, resume creation and job applications.
“Career services is a place where you are the focus," said Justin Jones, director of Career Services. "We want to connect all students with the resources they need in order to move forward with their futures.”
Whether the next step is grad school, internships or landing a first job, Career Services has a variety of resources available to students.
“We have career directors located in the different colleges who are there to serve when you have decided what you want to do and want to connect with employers," Jones said.
This department also organizes all career fairs that take place on the BYU campus to connect students with future employers.
In the Career Services Studio, there are a handful of students who are trained as career mentors.
“They’re your peers trained in all of the basics, resume writing, cover letters, interview techniques, how to negotiate salary and how to put a personal statement together for grad school," Jones said. "Really all of the materials that you can put together for your job search toolkit.”
In a typical appointment, a mentor will walk a student through their resume and make edits to make it more professional and readable for their job search.
"We’ll also show the student how their major will help them get the career they want,” said Sam Warner, a Career Studios mentor.
One of the resources available to students is the Career Services website, where they can discover different fields and different kinds of jobs that they may not have known existed.
“On the explore tab on our website, we have all sorts of resources, like what can I do with this major, a day in the life of what it’s like to be an actuarial science professional," Jones said.
Through the explore page, students can also find personality assessments like the Meyers Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, TypeFocus, Strong Interest Inventory and the Clifton Strengths Assessment.
Career Services provides these assessments through University Advisement to help students understand themselves better to pick a career that fits them individually.
“Everyone is always asking, well how do I actually did a job? Coming here, we help connect the dots so it isn’t as daunting of a task,” McMullen said.
The Career Services department offers a variety of services on campus to help students make the crucial career decisions.
“We are probably the best-kept secret on campus, but we don’t want to be a secret anymore,” Jones said.
