BYU fashion show closes chapter on West Campus Central Building

Brigham Young University theatre student designers hosted the Fabulicious: A Totally Sweet Fashion Show on April 15 in the West Campus Central Building.

The show was the last event hosted in the building before the program moves into the new Arts Building in the fall semester. Associate professor Dennis Wright, who oversaw the course and the event, said the occasion carried added meaning.

Its a little melancholy, Wright said. Weve done really well down here, but we just felt like it was a fun bookend to our experience here.

Wright noted that the first production in the West Campus Central Building was also a fashion show four years ago.

So its fun to do the last thing as a fashion show too, Wright said.

The student designers spent the semester creating looks inspired by sweets and desserts. Karaleigh Garrison, the hair and makeup advisor for the course, created a look inspired by a wedding cake.

Its just the most elaborate thing I could think of. How often do you get a chance to be the most extra you get to be ever? Garrison said.

The look was inspired by Rococo, a style of art and decoration that emerged in France and is known for its ornate detail. Event attendee Earlyn Vi said the design was her favorite of the night. She also added that the atmosphere made the event especially meaningful.

Seeing, hearing and feeling the support that was in the room was very good. I loved seeing all the people who came to support their friends who modeled or designed costumes, Vi said.

Breanna Christensen volunteered to be a model after hearing about the opportunity in a BYU hair and makeup class.

I was like, That sounds kind of fun. I might as well try to go see what its like,' Christensen said.

Christensen received one course credit for modeling, but said she mostly participated for fun. Her look was inspired by a macaron and featured pastel colors and a macaron prop.

Wright said he was pleased with how the event turned out.

I couldnt be happier. Everything went really smoothly: the models were terrific, and the timing went really well, he said.
