American journalist, Evan Gershkovich, was arrested in Russia under suspicion of espionage in March 2023. On July 22 he was convicted and sentenced to sixteen years in prison. Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield has condemned the conviction, saying that Gershkovich was only arrested for being an American journalist.
