The Provo City Council discussed an increase in towing fees on Tuesday night which raised booting prices from $60 to $70, and towing fees from $175 to $198.

Public comments were heard at the meeting which began at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 26, at City Hall, 351 W. Center Street.

University Parking Enforcement had requested that change in a letter to the Council. Students who were aware of the potential increase disagreed with the idea.

“That’s horrifying! Money is tight for a lot of students and I think the $60 is enough to kind of drive the point home,” accounting student Corrine Bryce said.

Student Caleb Andrus said the pricing simply was not fair for students. “There’s such a lack of parking spaces to be increasing the punishment for breaking those rules. The punishment doesn’t fit the crime,” he said.

Michela LoRusso, studying mechanical engineering, agreed with both Bryce and Andrus.

“I don’t appreciate that. I’m already paying a lot to be at school, and I’m trying to make ends meet with everything else, and then having to already make a bad day worse by getting a boot and then have to pay more, just doesn’t seem very nice,” LoRusso said.

Students can attend city council meetings on the matter online via Youtube livestream or in person.
