Former BYU Basketball player to play in Japan

Former BYU Basketball star Kyle Collinsworth signed with the Mikawa Seahorses this week, making the move from the U.S. to Japan to continue his professional career.

Collinsworth, who set the NCAA single-season triple-double record with six while at BYU, played from 2010-2011 and 2013-2016, with a Latter-day Saint mission to Russia in between.

He played for the Salt Lake City Stars in the NBA’s G-League last season, averaging 9.7 points, six rebounds and 3.1 assists per game.

Collinsworth played for the Dallas Mavericks’ G-League affiliate, the Texas Legends, from 2016-2018. During the 2017-2018 season, he played for the Mavericks and Legends on a two-way contract.

He scored 13 points and had nine rebounds and 6 assists in his best game as a Maverick.

The Mikawa Seahorses play in Kariya, Aichi in Japan’s B. League, a three-division, 48-team league. They went 20-23 this year until the season was called off in March due to the pandemic.

Collinsworth will join Davante Gardner, a former Marquette player, as the only two Americans on a primarily Japanese roster.

The Seahorses begin their 2020-2021 season on Oct. 3 against the Shibuya Sun Rockers.
