As Grammy Award-winning singer Colbie Calliat stepped up to the mic, she clued the audience into a secret: “I’ve never done anything like this before,” Caillat said to the crowd. “I’ve been so impressed with everyone here.”

As she began to sing, the audience rose to their feet in the Marriott Center and began to dance, setting the mood for the appropriately-named BYU Spectacular!

This year’s Homecoming spectacular brought top-tier performers like Caillat and American Idol runner-up David Archuleta together to perform with BYU Vocal Point, the Cougarettes, Living Legends, Young Ambassadors, Syncopation, Synthesis and Women’s Chorus on Oct. 11–12.

Caillat and Archuleta received multiple standing ovations during the events as they performed their most loved songs.

The performance kicked off with an opening joined by all BYU performing groups and Caillat singing her single, “Brighter Than The Sun.”

The stadium was completely full as audience members clapped and sang along with Caillat and the performers.

Caillat and Archuleta took turns showcasing their songs alongside choreography from BYU’s performing arts groups.

Caillat sang “Lucky” with Vocal Point soloist Jantzen Dalley and “Try” with BYU’s Women’s Chorus providing backup harmonies. Caillat discussed her own insecurities and how it inspired her to write the inspirational tune.

“We have all felt insecure in our own skin. I wrote this song for myself and for anyone listening to be exactly who you are. The world needs us to be different,” she said.

The Women’s Chorus also performed an arrangement of “This is Me” from “The Greatest Showman.” Performers wore a variety of outfits on stage as they danced behind the soloists.

“They gave us a prompt to put together a costume where we all chose something we were passionate about,” said Larisa Mullen, a member of the Women’s Chorus. “I wore a lit skirt to go with a stars theme.”

Nearing the end of the performance, Archuleta brought the audience to their feet as he sang, “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down On Me” by Elton John.

“The song was gorgeous. He really showed off his vocal abilities and talent,” said Charice Lee, a music education major and sophomore at BYU.

The BYU Spectacular! concluded with all university performing groups on stage and both guest singers, Caillat and Archuleta, joined for a rendition of “Walking on Sunshine” by Kimberley Rew.
