Marriott School of Business
- An all-female team of Marriott students competed at the invite-only CoMis IT competition, held at the University of Minnesota, in April. Making history as BYU’s first team to participate, the team’s problem-solving skills in simulated business situations earned the team third place overall and first among all U.S. schools.
- The Marriott School of Business announced Brigitte C. Madrian as the new dean on May 23. Madrian received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in economics from BYU and earned her Ph.D. in economics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Currently, Madrian works as the Aetna Professor of Public Policy and Corporate Management and chair of the Markets, Business and Government Area in the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. She will begin her term as dean on January 1, 2019.
David O. McKay School of Education
- The Training Advisory Committee of the American Psychological Association (APA) Minority Fellowship Program awarded McKay School student Marcie Calder the Minority Fellowship Program Services for Transition Age Youth (STAY) fellowship. Planning to help adolescents with disabilities participate in community life post-schooling, Calder’s specific passion secured her the grant.
College of Humanities
- The dean of the College of Humanities reappointed Dana Scott Bourgerie and Carl Sederholm as department chairs over Asian and Near Eastern Languages and Comparative Arts and Letters, respectively.
- Bourgerie works as director of the Cambodian Oral History project, which documents stories of Cambodian people who lived through a mass genocide in the 1970s. Learn more about the project here.
- Sederholm received praise for his book, “The Age of Lovercraft,” and currently holds editorship over The Journal of American Culture.
College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences
- Joshua Reynolds, a BYU computer science alumnus, presented research on YubiKey usability at the 39th IEEE Symposium on Security and Privacy on May 23. Chosen as one of only 11 percent of papers accepted, Reynold’s research questioned one’s ability to operate this computer security device without the aid of an IT team. His investigation, with the help of BYU computer science professor Kent Seamons, brought forth eye-opening results.
