SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The former treasurer of two Utah County irrigation companies has been accused of embezzling more than $1 million.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports that a federal indictment filed Wednesday accuses Michael Shumway of diverting company money to personal accounts and selling water shares for personal gain. He is also charged in U.S. District Court with one count of mail fraud.

Shumway’s attorney, Matthew Howell, did not return a request for comment.

Shumway served as the secretary and treasurer of American Fork Irrigation Company from about 1998 to May 2015, and in the same positions at Lehi Irrigation Company from 2007 to May 2015. He is accused of taking money beginning in 2004.

The mail fraud charge stems from a bank statement mailed to Shumway in 2015.
