The BYU football team has announced that Taysom Hill will be the Cougars’ starting quarterback heading into the team’s opener against Arizona.

Quarterbacks coach Ty Detmer officially tabbed Hill the starter following the conclusion of Tuesday’s practice.

Hill, a senior, has been competing with sophomore quarterback Tanner Mangum for the starting position since March. Mangum started in 12 of 13 games for the Cougars in 2015, playing in place for an injured Hill.

Hill has only played in six games total over the last two seasons, although he managed eight passing touchdowns and 10 more on the ground within the limited action. He suffered a season-ending lisfranc injury  in the 2015 opener against Nebraska, and in 2014, it was a fractured left leg against Utah State that sidelined the star quarterback.

Hill has 31 passing touchdowns and 24 rushing scores in his BYU career.
