The BYU swim and dive team held its annual meet against former Cougars on Friday.

“It’s fun for the swimmers to see the alumni come back, and to see what they can do in a swimsuit” BYU head coach John Brooks said. “Our first meet is coming up this week, so this is a good benchmark for our current swimmers. Some of our returned missionaries are starting to get that speed back, so that’s good to see for them, too.”

Swimmers, student-athletes and alumni alike were able enjoy one another's company in some friendly competition. Assistant coach Yolanda Bates took part in multiple events as well, including the 50-meter breaststroke.

The BYU swimmers and alumni had an impressive meet. Senior Jake Taylor took first in the 200-meter freestyle and posted a time of 1:45.40. Zerlynn Tiang and Rainer Ng both won the 100-meter butterfly event with a 57.98 and a 49.61 respectively. Alumnus Jordan Fletcher drew cheers in the 50-meter freestyle event by swimming a 20.78.

The men's and women's teams are relatively young with only eight seniors total. The Cougars welcomed home 12 swimmers from their missions this season; 10 for the men's team and two for the women's.

The men's team seeks to win it's third straight Mountain Pacific Sports Federation title while the women's team looks to improve from last year's fourth place finish.

The Cougars kick-off the regular season by traveling to Grand Junction for the Colorado Mesa Invitational on Oct. 9 and 10.
