Journalism students from The Universe and ElevenNEWS took home numerous awards during the Society of Professional Journalists’ annual conference. The conference was held in Denver and was attended by students and professionals from Utah, New Mexico, Colorado and Wyoming.

Students from BYU finished first in nine categories and were finalists in seven other categories. The Universe won Best All-Around Non-Daily Student Newspaper and ElevenNEWS won Best All-Around Television Newscast.

Judges said the BYU submissions were “effective reporting of breaking news,” the most “mature and polished writing of the bunch” and that BYU’s “effort shows cleverness and innovation.”
