Sophomores McKenna Bull and Mercedes O’Connor were each honored with awards for their performances at the Wilson/DeMarini Desert Classic tournament in Las Vegas over the weekend. The West Coast Conference named Bull the “Pitcher of the Week,” while College Sports Madness named O’Connor the “Madness WCC Softball Player of the Week.”

Bull had 20 strikeouts and went 4-0 at the tournament. She pitched 19.2 innings, giving up only 18 hits while maintaining a 2.14 ERA.

O’Connor hit .542 at the tournament and has an overall .333 average so far this season. She hit five RBIs and didn’t have any fielding errors in four put outs.

Bull’s and O’Connor’s outstanding performances led the Cougars to defeat Hawaii, Northwestern, UNLV and UTEP at the Desert Classic. The Cougars look to improve their 6-4 overall record as they travel to Cathedral City, California, to compete in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic tournament Feb. 19–21.
