SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Prosecutors want a 17-year-old accused in the 2012 death of his girlfriend to be tried an adult.

The Colorado boy appeared in a Utah courtroom Thursday with his hands shackled in front of him as a judge set a preliminary and adult certification hearing for March 2.

Prosecutor Patricia Cassell says the violent nature of the allegation should bring the case out of juvenile court. Defense attorneys declined to comment.

The body of 15-year-old Anne Kasprzak (KAS-per-zack) was found in the Jordan River in March 2012.

The suspect was 14 at the time. The Associated Press is not naming him because he is a juvenile.

Search warrants state Kasprzak told people she was pregnant and wrote in a journal her boyfriend didn’t seem to want the baby. Her family told police she wasn’t pregnant.
