HYRUM, Utah (AP) — Authorities have identified a man who died after being shot multiple times by his brother-in-law in Hyrum.

Cache County sheriff’s officials say 37-year-old Robert Van Hemert was found dead in his home about 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Deputies say his brother-in-law, 40-year-old Aaron Smith of Provo, acknowledged he had shot Van Hemert and was detained.

Investigators say the two men had been fighting over property issues inside the home when Van Hemert pulled a gun. Deputies say Smith responded by pulling out his own gun, and Van Hemert was fatally shot.

Authorities say they are still investigating and have not officially arrested anyone.
