October brought the start of fall and, with it, the need to start wearing extra layers. But with 80-degree weather on the first day of autumn, jackets and scarves aren’t quite ready to make their debut. It’s never too early, however, to start adding layers to your lips with new fall shades.

“It’s all about deep purples, deep oranges and maroons this fall,” said Kim Richards, local makeup artist and aesthetician.

So here they are — this season’s lip looks for every occasion:

1. CHA-CHING CHERRY (marvelous MOXIE lipgloss by bareMinerals, $18)

This look features a sassy, bright maroon color with the sheen that accompanies a gloss. It can be worn as a sheer look for a day, or it can be layered to make a statement for a date night, girl’s night or library night.

“The application is super easy,” said Madeleine Hettinger, a junior at BYU. “I can just toss it in my bag and put it on whenever.”

2. LOVE (CC+ LIP SERUM by IT cosmetics, $24)

“LOVE” is an everyday go-to product. It’s easy to apply on the way out the door, and it will provide the confidence necessary to talk to that cute boy in religion class. The subtle brown tones in the serum highlight the natural pigment lips provide, and the gloss adds an understated shine.

“It’s not something that stands out, but it makes you feel put together,” sophomore Emily Howell said. “It’s that finishing touch that everyone looks for.”

3. DEVIL’S FOOD CAKE (butter gloss by NYX, $5)

“DEVIL’S FOOD” is a sheer gloss that goes on with a deep berry color. The look is elegant and refined. Throw it on and make that ex-boyfriend jealous at this Friday’s wedding reception.

4. SPICY PEACH (high intensity herbal lip balm by PALLADIO, $7)

Even though the name of the color might be off-putting, the “SPICY PEACH” lip balm is the the perfect staple for the season. It has a light shimmer and neutral color that evens the tone of your lips. Shea butter, jojoba oil and olive oil will hydrate lips during the transition to dry autumn air.

“It’s a fast application, everyday-wear, go-to product,” said Kari Trachmann, a junior at BYU.

5. RUBY MURRAY (moisture matte lipstick by BUTTER LONDON, $22)

Make a statement with this deep, plummy look. The matte finish keeps it sophisticated and young. It’s perfect for a formal event, but that shouldn’t stop keep anyone from busting it out for Wednesday-night Zumba class.

“It’s a statement, so if the only makeup I put on is lipstick, I still feel done up,” said Ashlyn Allred, a junior at BYU.

6. FIRECRACKER (lip lacquer by SMASHBOX, $24)

As the name indicates, this makeup creates a bold and bright look that draws the eye. And once in a while every girl needs a little extra attention. The fact that it’s a lip lacquer means it is more opaque than other options and will last longer and need fewer reapplications than most glosses.

Bonus Tip: “Don’t forget to prep your lips before applying any product,” said Morgin Slade, an aesthetician. “They are like the canvas for your painting. You can make your own sugar scrub with brown sugar, honey and any kind of oil, including cooking oils or essential oil. I like to use lavender.”
