Feds issue safety guidelines after miner’s death

EAST CARBON, Utah (AP) — Federal officials are issuing guidelines to miners nationwide after a September accident at a Carbon County coal mine killed a 46-year-old worker.

Officials with the Mine Safety and Health Administration issued a list of best practices for working with equipment like the mobile diesel can-setter that Alejandro Ramirez was operating at the time of his death.

They say miners should not position themselves in “pinch-point” areas or near the bending parts of equipment unless they have a lock in place or another way to stop the movement.

Ramirez was killed in the West Ridge Mine on Sept. 16 when the machinery somehow bent and crushed him.

The safety agency is investigating the exact cause of the incident.
