Group claims radioactive waste burned

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Advocacy groups are claiming a facility criticized for its incineration of medical waste near homes in North Salt Lake also burned radioactive material.

The group Communities for Clean Air wants Stericycle shut down, and point to a video interview with an anonymous former employee played during a press conference Wednesday. The person accuses the company of ignoring rules limiting the amount and radioactivity of waste coming into the plant.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports state authorities are investigating.

A spokeswoman for the company calls the accusations unlikely and says they would violate company procedures.

Stericycle is taking steps to move to a remote west desert location. The Standard-Examiner reports that Utah is one of a handful of states that allow medical waste to be burned.
