BYU football prepared to take the bull by the horns this weekend against Texas

BYU’s chances to find a win over Texas are looking bright.

With BYU coming out on a solid win against UConn last week, the BYU Cougars turn to face their next opponent, the Texas Longhorns.

BYU’s quarterback Taysom Hill led the Cougars to a 35-10 win over the Huskies, working with an offensive mindset that allowed him to run for 97 yards and throw for 308, making the Cougars look versatile while showing off their potential for another win.

Meanwhile the Longhorns are coming out on a win of their own.

Having trampled North Texas, the Longhorns had a total of 353 yards offensively while holding North Texas to a surprisingly low 94 yards. The Longhorns’ defense only allowed 15 yards passing and 79 rushing.

It’s no secret that the formula to last year’s victory over Texas was to “run on them,” as Taysom Hill said at last year’s game, when BYU ran the length of the field and then some to have a 40-21 win over Texas, a day no Cougar or Longhorn fan will soon forget.

BYU also set the record of most yards run on a Longhorn defense, which was 550.

Despite the skeptics, the stars could be aligning in favor of BYU once again this football season.

Texas quarterback David Ash is out this week with a concussion, having sustained it during last week’s game against North Texas, where he played all four quarters in seemingly good condition but started showing symptoms of a concussion just hours after the game.

Longhorns head coach Charlie Strong made sure to address the injury.

“Anytime you have that number of concussions, you have to be concerned,” Strong said. “You’re always concerned about a young man’s health, and we would never jeopardize a young man’s health just for this football team. Players’ health is always first.”

This leaves the Texas offense in the inexperienced hands of sophomore Tyrone Swoopes, who will be making his first career start at quarterback.

On top of the quarterback problem, senior offensive tackle Desmond Harrison and junior offensive tackle Kennedy Estelle are facing a one-game suspension due to team rule violations. It was later released that they will not be playing in the game against BYU.

Even with these setbacks, Texas is no doubt looking for revenge.

“They’ll come out with a revenge attitude,” Hill said. “We’re prepared for that and prepared to come in and match their energy.”

With game two on the line the BYU Cougars will meet the Texas Longhorns at Darrell K Royal–Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin, Texas, on Saturday, Sept. 6, 2014, at 5:30 p.m. (MDT).
