Former dean of the College of Fine Arts and Communications passes away

James Albert Mason, former dean of the College of Fine Arts and Communications at BYU, died on May 15, 2014.

He was chairman of the music department and was key in completing BYU’s Museum of Art, appointed as its founding director when it was finished.

Mason received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music from BYU before moving on to Arizona State University for his doctorate.

He was born and raised in Springville, where he fell in love with music and art at an early age.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, May 22, 2014, at 11 a.m., at the Sunset Heights Sixth Ward at 500 S. 600 West, Orem. The family has asked that donations be made to the BYU Museum of Art and that condolences be sent to www.sundbergolpinmortuary.com.
