Google Fiber is officially in the homes and apartments of Provo residents. Cougars have had the opportunity to demo and play with Google Fiber to see how fast a gigabit really is. With various packages, plans and prices, the question now lies: is it worth it?
“The free option was going to be slower than what we have now, so we didn’t do it. Also, we’re cheap so we didn’t pay for the upgraded plan. If the free stuff was faster than what I have now, I would do it.” — Kylee Hekking, accounting, McLean, Virginia.
“It has run as fast as I’ve wanted it to, and there have been no hiccups at all. It’s a little slower, but I’d say it’s more reliable. Our HOA provides us with Fiber and Comcast, so we can pick which one we want to connect to, which is nice.” — Keith Mayberry, physiology, Bakersfield, California.
“I don’t use the internet enough to need it.”—Ty Madsen, computer science, Grass Valley, California.
“The free Google Fiber is not nearly as cool as people think it is. It’s 5mbph, which is as fast as my phone. I don’t use the internet enough to need it, though to other people who do gaming or streaming and use their computers a lot, it might be worth it.” — Ressa Anderson, human development, South Jordan.
“The paid one is a little expensive, for us at least, with four roommates. So the basic plan is enough for us, we don’t really need any more than that. We watch YouTube videos at home and do homework, but nothing super crazy. Basic internet suffices our needs.”—Nick Brannam, exercise science. St. Louis, Missouri.
“When we first got it, we decided to pay for the medium-priced service with the fast internet and no TV. But honestly, we didn’t get much out of it. It was faster than what we had been getting, but not as good as they promised it would be. Part of that was that everyone in the Apt complex had Wifi and all the signals were bouncing off of each other, so it was hard to get a good signal. We downgraded after a couple months, and it’s been about the same.” — Jackson Skinner, history, Trophy Club, Texas.
“My internet sucks. We’re now with Veracity, and our internet has only been at 1/2 mbph per second. If you’ve ever had that slow of speed during finals, which we did, for everyone in our apartment, it’s pretty awful. We’re actually getting Google Fiber today and I’m looking forward to faster internet.” — Keala Kendall, media arts, computer science, editing, Hawaii.
