Provo Parks and Recreation will host its first Weihnachtmarkt on Saturday December 7 from 4:00 pm to 9:00 pm with vendors, entertainment and pictures with Santa.

Weihnachtmarkt means Christmas Market in German and has been a German tradition for over 600 years.

Provo’s Christmas Market will replace the holiday Parade of Lights, and will take place in conjunction with the Lights On tree lighting ceremony by Mayor Curtis and Santa Claus. The market also has a giveaway where participants can win prizes and gift cards from local businesses.

“We decided (Weihnachtmarkt) would be a perfect event to go with the holiday events by boosting local economy, providing a free holiday event, contributing to downtown Provo and showcasing local musicians – all fitting into the traditional Lights On setting,” said Eric Layland, event coordinator for Provo Parks and Recreation.

The Christmas Market has elements geared toward BYU students, like the free live music, and is a way to involve students in the community.

“The Christmas Market will give students a chance to have fun while getting off campus and into the community,” Layland said.

The market takes place at 351 West Center Street and entry to the market is free. To enter the giveaway, visit https://www.facebook.com/provocity.
